Since 1998, Venezuela has undergone a transformation from a state ruled by a minority, wealthy elite tied to the US -- to a sovereign state governed by the people through an immensely popular elected leader, Hugo Chavez Frias. Over the past ten years, there have been remarkable transformations in Venezuela, including improvements in healthcare, education, participatory democracy, workers rights, womens rights, Afro-Venezuelan and indigenous rights, governance, the organization of the economy, the refocusing of foreign policy and trade, and much, much more.
There isn't enough space here to describe what has been, and continues to take place in Venezuela. Yet, despite the positive changes, the international mainstream media continues to demonize the Venezuelan government -- in many cases, spreading false information. Could it be that the model of government promoted in the global "North" feels threatened by a government that is showing there IS an alternative to free trade, rampant resource extraction, representative "elite" democracy, and the capitalist economic model?
We recommend you come to Venezuela and see for yourself. Rather than filter your information through North American media, talk to the people that are living the changes themselves, on the ground in the country. We guarantee you won't be disappointed! And -- it's a beautiful country!! Venezuela may not be perfect, but it is showing the world that there IS an alternative!
In the meantime, here are a couple of good sources of English-language news and information on Venezuela:
